Initial Public Offering

Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) means a company offers its shares to the public for the first time and raises funds for its business. After the IPO, the company’s shares are listed on a stock exchange, where investors can buy and sell them. An IPO can help a company grow its business, improve its market presence and reach more investors. For investors, it is an opportunity to invest in a company at the time it enters the stock market.

IPOs can offer opportunities for both short-term and long-term investors, but they also involve risks. The share price may rise or fall after listing, and not every IPO performs as expected. Before applying, investors should research the company, understand its business and financial position, and read the official offer documents carefully. Making informed decisions and understanding the risks are important steps when considering an IPO investment.

IPO FAQs

Your Questions, Answered
What is the meaning of IPO (Initial Public Offering) ?

An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is the process through which a company offer it’s share to the public for the 1st time, enabling investors to get ownership in the company. This allows the company to raise capital by diluting its ownership to the public for expansion of their business & to pay debt, etc.

IPO funding is a facility that lets you borrow money to apply for a larger number of shares during an Initial Public Offering, improving your odds of securing a bigger allotment. It essentially covers the shortfall between the investment amount required and the funds you already have on hand. You’re only required to pay a small upfront amount — known as the margin — while the remaining amount is financed by the lender.

A Book-Built IPO allows a company to offer its shares within a specified price band, such as ₹100–₹120 per share. Investors can place bids by indicating the number of lots they want to purchase and the price they are willing to pay within this range.
At the end of the bidding period, the Cut-off Price is determined based on the demand and bids received. Investors who bid at or above the final price may be allotted shares.
Unlike fixed-price IPOs, the book-building process enables market-driven price discovery by giving the company a clearer picture of investor demand.
Book building helps achieve better price discovery and reduces the chances of significant underpricing or overpricing. As a result, it is one of the most widely used methods for determining IPO prices in India.

Yes, you are allowed to modify or cancel your IPO application while the IPO subscription period is ongoing. Once the IPO closes, further changes are not allowed.

  1. After the IPO window closes, you can check your IPO allotment status via the investment platform you used to apply (such as RIISE app) or the registrar’s website using your application number or PAN.

Yes, any shares you are allotted as part of a successful IPO bid must be held in dematerialised form. This makes a Demat account mandatory for investing in IPOs.
