F&O (Future & Option)

Futures & Options (F&O) are derivative instruments that enable traders to participate in market movements with comparatively lower capital through leverage. These instruments are widely used for implementing trading strategies, managing market exposure, and taking positions across various market segments.

A Futures contract represents an agreement to buy or sell an underlying asset at a predetermined price on a specified date. An Options contract provides the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a predetermined price by paying a premium.

Through F&O trading, investors can access index and stock derivatives and benefit from advanced trading opportunities. Successful participation in the derivatives market requires a disciplined approach, sound risk management, and informed decision-making.

Backed by expert research and market insights from Motilal Oswal, RIISE empowers traders with the tools and information needed to navigate the F&O market more confidently.

Future & Options FAQs

Your Questions, Answered
What are Futures?

Think of a Future as a binding promise

  • You agree to buy (or  sell) something at a fixed price on a specific date in the future.
  • Example: You ” promise ” to buy 100 shares of Reliance at ₹3,000 next month. Even if the price jumps to ₹3,500, you still get them for ₹3,000. But if the price drops to ₹2,500, you still have to buy them at ₹3,000. You are locked in.

In trading, options are contracts which give the buyer of the contract a right to buy/sell the underlying asset in the future at a specific price – but not an obligation to do so. While a call option gives the buyers of the option the right to buy an underlying stock or commodity at a pre-agreed price called the strike price, the sell option allows the buyers to sell an underlying stock or commodity at the strike price.

F&O stands for Futures & Options — derivative contracts that let traders buy or sell an underlying asset (like a stock or index) at a predetermined price on a future date, without owning the asset directly.

A Futures contract is an obligation to buy or sell the underlying asset at a fixed price on expiry. An Options contract gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy (Call) or sell (Put) the asset at a fixed price, in exchange for a premium.

Expiry is the last date on which an F&O contract remains valid. After expiry, the contract is settled or exercised, and any open position is automatically closed if not squared off earlier.
